Investigating the water security risks associated with climate and land use change

- The Water for a Healthy Country Flagship is investigating how a changing climate and land use is impacting on Australia's future water security and developing scientific tools and knowledge to help water managers plan accordingly. Learn more>

Researching water use efficiency for increased grain yield

- CSIRO is working with research partners on the Grains Research and Development Corporation's (GRDC) new initiative to improve the water use efficiency (WUE) of grain-based farming systems. Learn more>

Rural water resources in Australia face a major transformation in coming decades, with increased pressure on a limited resource demanding more sophisticated management.

CSIRO is committed to providing solutions that increase regional water security while meeting social, environmental and critical human needs.

Our research aims to:

  • Provide a better understanding of the impacts of climate and land use change on water availability and on water uses to ensure better future planning and more equitable water sharing.
  • Develop an improved understanding of groundwater systems and their interactions with surface water systems so we can manage systems sustainably.
  • Create a better systems understanding of the social, economic and ecological consequences of reduced water availability, water buybacks and infrastructure investments so that the effectiveness of various management options can be understood and maximised.
  • Encapsulate new knowledge and understanding in new models and tools to underpin water plans and allocation decisions.
