A Forest Fire Danger Meter – Mk5.

The CSIRO Fire Danger and Fire Spread Calculator

CSIRO’s grassland and forest fire danger and spread meters are now available as a computer program, complete with extensive help files explaining their operation.

The program, called the CSIRO Fire Danger and Fire Spread Calculator, is compatible with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT and Windows 2000. It is available as a free download.

The software has been written by CSIRO using the algorithms published by Noble, Bary and Gill (1980) for the Forest Fire Danger Meter, and the algorithms published by Cheney, Gould and Catchpole (1998) for grasslands. It also includes the Fire Spread Meter for Northern Australia.

Conditions of use

Permission is granted to any individual or institution to use, copy, or redistribute this software so long as all of the original files are included unmodified, that it is not sold for profit, and that the copyright notice is retained.

The program contains extensive help files explaining its operation.

Whilst every care has been taken in compiling this software, no assurances are given that it is free from error or omission.

The CSIRO and the authors make no expressed or implied warranty or representation of the merchantable quality or fitness for purpose of the software and disclaim all liability for the consequences of anything done or omitted to be done by any person in reliance upon the software.

Download and installation

To access The CSIRO Fire Danger and Fire Spread Calculator (Download) software, save the file to a temporary directory that you can find easily on your computer. The file is approximately 882 kb.

Double-click on the downloaded file to automatically extract the files you need to install the software. A number of files will be extracted. Run the file setup.exe and follow the instructions to install the software.
