The acoustics team has expertise in developing and implementing advanced online analysis of industrial processes using acoustic techniques.

Researchers in this group use their specialised skills in ultrasonic and passive acoustics techniques to develop novel science and methodology to solve fundamental problems in industry.

Their knowledge and expertise in the area have led to a number of new technologies and techniques, such as:

  • a new mathematical algorithm to more accurately determine particle size in slurries, which has been deployed in the CSIRO-developed UltraPS size analyser
  • a method to determine the free solids in saturated solutions by combining ultrasonic velocity measurement and gamma transmission
  • development of acoustic emission techniques for monitoring unit processes such as mills and cyclones
  • experimental measurements of sound propagation in powders and granules for determining particle strength for agglomerated particles.
