Overview

CSIRO is conducting research into the health, safety and environmental aspects of using nanotechnologies in manufacturing.

Nanoparticles are defined as having dimensions between one and one hundred nanometres.

They are smaller than human cells, with some being approximately the same size as important biological molecules.

Our research aims to understand and minimise the risks to human health associated with the development of nanotechnology-based products, from the manufacture of nanomaterials and products containing them, through to their use by consumers.

Our research also aims to understand the fate of nanoparticles released to the natural environment, and their impact on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

The following pages, answer some of the commonly asked questions about nanoparticles in sunscreens.
