Astrophysics

Studying our Galaxy and the universe beyond.

The Crab Nebula

Space and ground telescopes work together - CSIRO and NASA team up to study small stars called pulsars.

The Galaxy.

One "galaxy" inside another - A mini-galaxy gives a clue to the power of black holes.

The 12-m antenna of Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand.

A 5000 km telescope - Telescopes in Australia and New Zealand zero in on a galaxy's heart.

Gas cloud.

A big nest of baby stars - Gas cloud could show how the biggest stars form.

Galaxies

- An Australian-led team of astronomers has found faint galaxies previously hidden behind the dust and gas of our own Galaxy. The HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) project gave us the first ever view of the Local Universe unobscured by galactic foreground stars and dust and mapped out the whole sky out to distances of about 150 megaparsecs. Pulsars

- The Parkes Pulsar Timing Array project may give the first direct detection of gravity waves from space. Australian researchers are working with international colleagues to detect gravity waves from space using pulsar timing observations at the Parkes radio telescope. Learn more>

Astronomers in CASS undertake major observing projects, many of which involve large national and international collaborations.

The success of these projects rides on a deep knowledge of the capabilities of the CASS telescopes.

As well as conducting their own research, CASS astronomers provide scientific support to the many users of CASS telescopes who come from other institutions.
