C3DMM is developing capabilities in the area of hyperspectral sensing technologies.
Centre of Excellence for 3D Mineral Mapping
The Minerals Down Under Flagship has partnered with government and industry to form a centre of excellence to develop three-dimensional (3D) mineral maps of the Australian continent.
- 29 April 2010 | Updated 14 October 2011
In February 2008, The Centre of Excellence for 3D Mineral Mapping (C3DMM) received A$1.51 million from the Western Australian (WA) Department of Commerce to strengthen research and development capabilities in the area of hyperspectral sensing technologies for the WA resources industry.
The centre will enable the Minerals Down Under Flagship’s long term goal of creating a new suite of publically-available 3D mineral maps.
The main aims of the centre are to:
- The centre will strengthen research and development capabilities in the area of hyperspectral sensing technologies for the Western Australian resources industry.establish strategic national/international relationships to help secure the 3D hyperspectral data
- develop methods to transform the hyperspectral signatures into geoscience information products
- establish related national/international geoscience information products standards, including accuracy assessment and traceability
- demonstrate publically how these 3D mineral maps can be used for enhanced understanding of Archaean Au and tertiary iron mineral systems
- effectively transfer the technology and related geoscience information to the Australian minerals community.
Research
The centre’s research strategy has five interlinked research programs focused on establishing 3D mineral maps of prospective WA terrain.
The programs are:
- Sub-surface mineralogy: determining hyperspectral signatures of drill cores and delivering spectral mineralogy
- Surface mineralogy: delivering a surface mineral map of WA using current and future airborne and spaceborne hyperspectral systems
- Information systems: developing methods and algorithms to make accurate measures of mineral formation, establish interfaces between different data formats, and research and build appropriate information access/delivery systems
- 3D mineral mapping: building public 3D demonstration mineral models
- Mineral systems: improving knowledge about the information, target vectors and exploitation of economic mineral deposits.
