Light Metals Flagship making a difference to industry

Read customer stories showing how our science in light metals is making a difference to Australian industry.

  • 11 May 2011 | Updated 14 October 2011

Researchers in the CSIRO Light Metals Flagship have a history of working closely with industry partners to:

  • provide practical solutions to industry challenges
  • provide scientific expertise to assist in making industry more productive
  • keep Australian industry at the forefront of global competition with Australian innovation.

This page presents a number of customer stories, showing how we have successfully implemented new and improved technologies in:

  • the primary light metal production industry (aluminium, magnesium and titanium)
  • metal manufacturing (die casting, direct manufacturing).

Technology developed by CSIRO scientists in collaboration with an Australian SME and Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) through the CAST CRC is helping boost global sales of Australian ingot casting machines.

A new casting technology, producing super-light magnesium alloy components that are cost-competitive with aluminium and steel, will be taken to market by a joint venture between the Light Metals Flagship and three South Australian manufacturing companies.
