Tasmanian ICT Centre

The Tasmanian ICT Centre has developed a world-class ICT research capacity and conducts innovative applied research in the areas of sensor networks and data management.

  • 7 July 2011 | Updated 14 October 2011

The Tasmanian ICT Centre (TasICTC) is a strategic alliance between the Australian and Tasmanian Governments and CSIRO.

Since its creation in 2006, TasICTC has grown to become a fundamental component of the Tasmanian innovation system. The 30-strong research team has developed strong state, national and international linkages and delivered research outcomes in water resources, coastal management, health and wellbeing, energy management and agribusiness.

TasICTC aims to promote employment growth and wealth creation throughout the Tasmanian economy by accelerating growth of its ICT industries.

Funding

TasICTC was intitally jointly funded by the Australian Federal Government through the Intelligent Island Program (administered by the Tasmanian Department of Economic Development, Tourism and the Arts) and CSIRO.

Further funding (A$50 million over five years) has recently been secured from the Federal and Tasmanian Governments, CSIRO and industry to sustain TasICTC to 2016.

Goal

The primary goal of TasICTC is to develop an internationally competitive ICT sector in Tasmania.

To reach this goal, we are working in four strategic areas:

  • building research capability
  • conducting innovative research
  • developing linkages and collaborations
  • undertaking knowledge and technology transfer.

Doctoral scholarship program

The TasICTC also aims to promote employment growth and wealth creation throughout the Tasmanian economy by accelerating growth of its ICT industries.

A joint Doctoral scholarship program with the University of Tasmania is part of our commitment to the long term growth of ICT research capability and to building research relationships.

Over the life of this program we will support ten scholars offering them the opportunity to work side-by-side with CSIRO researchers.
